On 6 December, at around 11:00 a.m., the Arakan Army (AA), together with the Rohingya Jury Committee and the Rohingya Unity Council, held a meeting with displaced villagers from the Kya Kyet Pet Kan Pyin / Tat Ya village tract in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State.

A local resident told Arakan Now that the meeting crushed the remaining hope of villagers who have long dreamed of returning to their homes.

“The AA told us that if we want to return to Kya Kyet Pet Kan Pyin / Tat Ya, we must pay 3,000 lakhs MMK,” the resident said. “Even if we somehow manage to pay this huge amount, they told us we will not be allowed to resettle in our original homes.”

According to the resident, the AA further stated that they plan to bring bulldozers to flatten the hills of Tat Yar, and then allow people to build houses on the leveled land.

“They said each family will be given only 40 or 50 square meters,” he added. “The land will be arranged like a camp, and we will be allowed to build only on the plot we are assigned. We will have no right to choose where to live.”

According local sources, AA has been seizing Rohingyas villages to establish Rakhine villages similar to practices previously carried out by Military Junta

Kya Kyet Pet Kan Pyin Tat Yar Ywar was previously burned down by the Arakan Army during fighting with the military junta, forcing residents to flee to neighboring villages.

Earlier, the AA had told residents that they would be allowed to return to their original homes and had collected lists of households. Arakan Now previously reported on these developments. Those reports can be read at the following links:
