The United Council of Rohang (UCR), as a representative Rohingya leadership body, expresses deep concern over the recent interview aired by Ekattor Media, where a few ordinary Rohingya individuals were selectively questioned about resettlement.
According to UCR, the individuals featured in the segment stated that they would consider resettlement only after the reporter specifically asked whether they would go to a third country if given the chance. Their responses reflected a personal reaction to a hypothetical question but not the collective will of the Rohingya community. Presenting such isolated answers as the community's general position is "misleading and inaccurate," the statement says.
UCR reaffirmed that these interviews do not represent the collective aspirations, political stance, or long-standing demands of the Rohingya people. The council warned that such selective reporting risks distorting public understanding and undermining the true voice of a persecuted community struggling for justice, dignity, and their rightful return.
For the last 8 years, the Rohingya community's ultimate and unwavering goal has been and remains such as safe, and dignified repatriation to our ancestral homeland, Arakan (Rakhine State), with Sustainable solutions. The resettlement of a small number of individuals, UCR emphasised, cannot be portrayed as a sustainable or comprehensive solution to the ongoing crisis.
The statement strongly condemn any attempt by media outlets to misrepresent our community's unified stance by amplifying a few reactions to leading or hypothetical questions. UCR urged all media organisations to uphold accuracy, fairness, and responsibility when reporting on marginalized communities.
UCR further called on all media organizations to engage with legitimate Rohingya leadership bodies and community representatives before presenting narratives that influence public perception and affect our people's future.
