A Rohingya man named Shunamia, 35, was found dead after being detained by the Arakan Army (AA) in Pauktaw Township, Arakan State.
Shunamia, son of Nazir, was arrested by the AA on 15 July after someone accused him of theft. He was taken to the AA’s local office in Ghandi village, Ale Kyun area.
Later, the AA office in charge called the camp leader of Nga Chaung (2) and said they could not keep Shunamia in custody based only on suspicion. He asked the leader to come and take him back.
But on 28 July, the same officer called again and said that Shunamia had escaped from the detention center.
The next morning, 29 July, his dead body was found near a Rakhine village.
Camp leaders went to meet AA officials to ask for permission to retrieve the body, but they have not returned yet. As of now, the body is still there and has not been moved.
Many Rohingya in Pauktaw Township are living in displacement camps, often under tight control and restrictions.
