Local Rakhine residents, together with members of the Arakan Army, are dismantling Rohingya houses and mosques in Myawtaung Village, northern Maungdaw Township, and using the materials to construct new Rakhine settler villages, eyewitnesses said.

In 2017, Myanmar’s military burned most of the houses and mosques in Myawtaung Village and forced residents to flee to Bangladesh during the genocidal clearance operations against the Rohingya. After that, about 50 houses and a small number of residents remained in the village, a resident told Arakan Now.

In 2024, when fighting erupted between the military regime and the Arakan Army, the remaining residents were again forced to flee to Bangladesh, leaving everything behind, locals said.

Materials taken from Rohingya homes are now being used to build new Rakhine settler villages in northern Maungdaw, including Phar Wut Chaung, Maung Na Ma, and Aung Mingalar, which were previously inhabited by Rohingya communities.

Eyewitnesses said the dismantling of Rohingya homes and religious sites has raised serious concerns about permanent displacement and the erasure of Rohingya communities from the area.
