Authorities in Satkania upazila of Chattogram, Bangladesh arrested 22 Rohingyas early Saturday during joint operations supported by the army and Ansar, according to a report by New Age.
Satkania UNO Khondoker Mahmudul Hasan said the detainees had left the Ukhiya Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar about two weeks ago and were working at local brick kilns. Based on intelligence, 10 were picked up from Sadaha union and 12 from Keochia union.
Hasan said the arrestees admitted to arriving from the camps around 15 days earlier to work as seasonal labourers. He warned that Rohingyas leaving the camps and dispersing into different areas—sometimes engaging in criminal activities—poses security risks ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Intelligence reports also indicate that uncontrolled Rohingya movement could create complications during the electoral period, he added.
The 22 detainees were being handed over to Ukhiya police through Satkania police. Earlier, on November 15, police detained eight other Rohingyas from Satkania municipality.
