A teenage Rohingya girl, Khushmida, daughter of Hf Abul Shoma and Khumsuma from Let Wea Daung Pyin Shey village tract, Htin Sha Phin hamlet, died after falling from a vehicle while attempting to escape from members of the Arakan Army (AA), who were taking her for military conscription.
A resident told Arakan Now that Khushmida had been kept in hiding for several days in different houses out of fear of being abducted after the AA ordered the village to send girls for military training. Later, her father brought her back home, believing it was unsafe to keep his adult daughter in other people’s houses.
On 14 February, the AA surrounded Htin Sha Phin hamlet to conscript girls. They found Khushmida at her home and took her away. While she was being transported in a vehicle, the girl attempted to escape, fell from the vehicle, and died.
Khusmida’s death has left her family and villagers in shock and fear, highlighting the growing dangers faced by young Rohingya girls amid forced conscription in the area. Residents say many families are now keeping their daughters hidden, uncertain how long they can protect them.
