Myanmar's acting president and military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, announced on Thursday, 11 September, that all charges against Dr. Aye Maung, chairman of the Arakan Front Party (AFP), have been dropped, granting him amnesty and clearing the way for his participation in the upcoming military-organised election.

Dr. Aye Maung is widely known not only as a Rakhine nationalist politician but also as one of the enablers of the Rohingya genocide. His speeches and political positions amplified anti-Rohingya sentiment and contributed to legitimising the Myanmar military’s campaign of mass violence, which forced more than 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh.

Observers say his release signals Min Aung Hlaing's intent to strengthen military influence in Rakhine State ahead of the upcoming elections.
