The Malaysian government will register all refugees in the country, including the Rohingya community, through the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) by January next year at the latest. The initiative aims to obtain accurate data and reduce Malaysia’s full dependence on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), officials said.
Malaysia’s Director General of Immigration, Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, stated that the country has long relied on UNHCR data, whose accuracy has been questioned. As a result, it remains unclear whether the current information is correct or if the actual number of refugees in Malaysia is higher than reported.
