The military Junta in Myanmar announced Monday that a phased election process will begin on December 28, according to a statement from the Union Election Commission. Date for subsequent phases are yet to be announced.
Larges areas of the country remain beyond the junta's control, governed by resistance groups and ethnic armed organisations, many of which have pledged to block the elections in their territories.
The military has framed the polls as a step toward ending ongoing conflicts, but observers both inside and outside Myanmar have dismissed the election as a tool to legitimise continued military rule.
