The European Union and its Member States expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Myanmar, highlighting the ongoing civil conflict and widespread violence against civilians, including the Rohingya in Rakhine State.

Speaking at the UNHCR 95th Standing Committee, EU representatives condemned violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. They emphasized that repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar must be safe, voluntary, and sustainable—conditions they say are not yet met.

The EU praised UNHCR’s protection of stateless populations and its assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. They reaffirmed support for Bangladesh’s role as a host country and stressed continued humanitarian, development, and diplomatic efforts for durable solutions.

Recent initiatives highlighted include backing the Joint Response Plan and programs focused on skills, education, and livelihoods for Rohingya refugees. The EU also welcomed efforts to simplify the coordination of the refugee response in line with the Humanitarian Reset.

The bloc reiterated its commitment to principled, sustainable support across the Asia-Pacific region, acknowledging the pressures on host countries and the work of UNHCR and humanitarian partners in challenging conditions.
