UNHCR says Canada has announced a CAD 10 million contribution to support Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox’s Bazar.

The funding will provide clean and safe cooking fuel to nearly 1.2 million refugees. It will be delivered through UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.

Aid officials say the support will reduce the use of firewood, which has been a major cause of deforestation around the camps. It is also expected to improve safety and health, especially for women and children who often collect firewood.

According to UNHCR, the use of cleaner fuel has already cut firewood use by around 80 percent, helping protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions.

Rohingya refugees have been living in Bangladesh for nearly nine years, and humanitarian groups say continued international support remains critical.
