The opposition party in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has called on China to play a stronger role in helping the Rohingya people return safely and with dignity to their homeland in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made this request during a recent five-day visit to China. He led a nine-member BNP delegation, visiting from June 22 at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Speaking to journalists at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Fakhrul said:
“We urged China to take more effective steps so that the Rohingya can return to their homeland safely, voluntarily, and with dignity.”
He also shared that Chinese officials responded positively. They assured the BNP delegation that they would continue trying to convince the Myanmar government to begin quick and peaceful repatriation.
“The Chinese authorities promised sincere efforts to engage with Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation,” Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader said the visit helped to build stronger ties between the BNP and the Communist Party of China, and hoped this relationship would support the interests of both countries and the Rohingya people in the future.
