Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today detained 21-year-old Jiban Tonchongya, an armed Arakan Army member, after he crossed into Bangladesh through the Balukhali border in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

Jiban, from Gorjbonia village in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari, surrendered an AK-47 rifle, 52 rounds, and two magazines, seeking refuge due to “personal security threats.” BGB says about 300 Arakan Army members have recently fled Myanmar and may try to enter Bangladesh.

The detainee will be handed over to police for illegal entry. The arrest comes hours after bursts of gunfire were heard across the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari, prompting heightened BGB patrols.
