Bangladesh govt forms national committee to coordinate Rohingya issues

The Bangladesh government has formed a national committee to coordinate and manage overall activities related to forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals in camp areas across Bangladesh, including maintaining law and order.


The 16-member committee was established by the Cabinet Division, with the home minister serving as convener, according to a gazette notification signed on Tuesday by Additional Secretary (Committee and Finance) Md Humayun Kabir, reports Dhaka Tribune.


Committee members include the foreign minister; state ministers for Women and Children Affairs and for Disaster Management and Relief; the cabinet secretary; the principal secretary to the prime minister; the senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs; the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division; the foreign affairs secretary; the disaster management and relief secretary; the inspector general of police; the director general of the NGO Affairs Bureau; the director general of National Security Intelligence; the director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI); the Chittagong divisional commissioner; and the refugee relief and repatriation commissioner of Cox’s Bazar.


The committee’s terms of reference include coordinating and overseeing all activities related to maintaining law and order in Rohingya camps in Bangladesh, as well as managing and supporting repatriation efforts. It will also monitor, evaluate, and review all initiatives concerning Rohingya nationals, including those carried out by the National Taskforce (NTF) on repatriation and the National Executive Committee formed to oversee relocation to Bhasan Char.


Additionally, the committee will assess security arrangements and address any other related matters as needed.
