The Arakan Army has severely restricted the movement of the displaced residents from Htan Shauk Kan Village also known as Hoyasari in Buthidaung Township.
Htan Shauk Kan is village that suffered one of the deadliest massacres in Rohingya history. On 2 May 2024, the village was burned down by the Arakan Army (AA), killing more than 600 residents — including children, women, and the elderly.
A small number of survivors reportedly took shelter in Sin Taung (စိန်တောင်) village. Later the AA built more than 85 houses in Hgnet Thay for these survivors and labelled it "Htan Shauk Kan New Village."
A resident told Arakan Now that the AA installed a checkpoint at the entrance of the new village, effectively keeping all residents under confinement. Their freedom of movement is strictly controlled.
"If anyone wants to go outside, they must apply for permission first. Only if approves, they can leave," the resident said.
Recently, three families attempted to flee towards Bangladesh. They managed to escape the village and reached Maungdaw. However, once the AA received information, forces searched for them and arrested them in Maungdaw and transported them back to Buthidaung.
