On 2 May 2024, Htan Shauk Kan village als known as Hoyasari was burned down by the Arakan Army (AA), killing more than 600 residents — including children, women, and the elderly. A small number of survivors reportedly took shelter in Sin Taung (စိန်တောင်) village.
The Arakan Army has reportedly constructed 85 houses in Hnget Thay (ငှက်သေ) village, a nearby village of Htan Shauk Kan, for survivors of the massacre — one of the worst in Rohingya history — in Buthidaung Township.
According to a local resident, the AA sent several villagers from Htan Shauk Kan to Sai Din, also known as Tar Raing (စိုင်းဒင်), a few weeks ago to gather bamboo and timber for the construction of the houses.
The report also alleges that the AA used unpaid labourers from Sin Taung village to help build the houses.
One resident told Arakan Now that 85 houses have been completed. However, few original families from Htan Shauk Kan remain. “The AA divided one family into several parts — giving one house to the father, one to the son, and one to the daughter,” the resident said. “Still, some houses remain empty.”
