The United Nations’ Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has reported new, first-hand evidence of grave human rights violations in Rakhine State, particularly affecting the Rohingya population.
According to the Mechanism’s Seventh Annual Report, the documented abuses include:
The detention, torture, and forced transfer of civilians.
Indiscriminate killings of civilians, including women, children, and the elderly.
Severe restrictions on the entry and exit of civilians, as well as blockades of humanitarian aid and essential supplies.
Arbitrary or deliberate artillery and aerial attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The IIMM stated that these alleged crimes have been committed by both the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, underscoring the widespread and systematic nature of the violence.
The report also details how investigators are collecting, preserving, and analysing evidence to support future criminal proceedings. The IIMM emphasised its commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of atrocities in Myanmar are held accountable.
