A 32-year-old Rohingya, Monzur Alom, son of Muhamed, from Mingalargyi Village in Maungdaw Township, died today after stepping on a landmine planted by the Arakan Army around 5 PM while searching for his cattle.
“His right leg was blown off below the knee when he stepped on the mine. He was being taken to a hospital in Bangladesh for treatment but died around 7 PM on the way,” a villager said.
“We don’t know who planted it, but since the AA took control of Maungdaw, there have been no other armed groups here,” he added.
On 2 May 2025, a 16-year-old boy from Ponn Gyar village in northern Maungdaw Township lost one of his legs after stepping on a landmine near the border fence while fishing, as Arakan Now previously reported.
Since the Arakan Army took control of Maungdaw Township, no other armed groups remain there. The Arakan Army has started planting various weapons, putting civilians at risk.
