The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Burma will be terminated. The designation was set to expire on November 25, 2025.

According to a notice prepared for publication in the Federal Register, the Secretary of Homeland Security decided to end Burma’s TPS designation after reviewing current conditions in the country and consulting with relevant U.S. government agencies. The Secretary concluded that Burma no longer meets the legal requirements for TPS.

The termination will take effect 60 days after the notice is officially published in the Federal Register. After that date, Burmese nationals and stateless individuals who last habitually resided in Burma will no longer be protected under TPS.

TPS provides temporary legal status and work authorization to people from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions that make it unsafe for them to return.
