The interim government is preparing to officially recognise Noor Mustafa, a 17-year-old Rohingya madrasa student, as a “July Martyr” for giving his life during last year’s anti-fascist protests.

Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam first proposed this recognition during a meeting of the advisory council on 22 June. He shared the news on his Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon. Later, the post was shared by Shafiqul Alam, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary.

According to Mahfuj Alam, the July Mass Uprising Directorate is working to complete the process. A government notification will be published soon to confirm Noor Mustafa’s status as a martyr.

Noor Mustafa was shot on 5 August last year while protesting in front of the Eidgaon police station in Cox’s Bazar. The protest was against the then Awami League government, which the opposition described as fascist. Pro-government forces opened fire on the protesters, and Noor was seriously injured. He died the next day in hospital.

Noor Mustafa’s father, Shafiul Alam, came to Bangladesh from Myanmar in 1993 and settled in the Eidgaon area. Noor was born in Bangladesh and was a tenth-grade student at Darus Salam Dakhil Madrasa.

This recognition by the government is seen as an important step in honouring the sacrifices made by young people, including those from the Rohingya community, in the struggle for democracy.
