Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, speaking from New York on Thursday, 19 June, urged the international community to urgently renew its focus and take concrete action to ensure the safe, dignified, and rights-respecting repatriation of the Rohingya refugees.
“This is not only a matter of justice, but also vital for preventing the root cause of a potential instability in our region,” Adviser Hossain emphasized.
For over eight years, Bangladesh has been hosting more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar due to persecution by the military regime. The humanitarian response, while commendable, has brought significant socio-economic and environmental challenges to Bangladesh.
“Our humanitarian act has put us in immense socio-economic and environmental challenges, and the situation is now posing new security risks,” he said in his statement delivered at the UN Security Council’s open debate on "Poverty, Underdevelopment and Conflict: Implications for the Maintenance of International Peace and Security."
The call for renewed international action comes at a critical moment as the protracted displacement threatens regional stability and calls for urgent, sustained global commitment.
