Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh have called for more land to be used as graveyards in the camps.
They said there is no space left to bury their dead. Refugees blamed the lack of space on the high number of people in the camps, the continued arrivals from Myanmar, and rising deaths and births.
Over one million Rohingya live in crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar after fleeing violence, hunger, and persecution in Arakan State, Myanmar. Many now say they face new problems, including the lack of proper burial space.
The Rohingya fled Myanmar in large numbers, especially in 2017, after mass violence. Many are still stuck in the camps with limited freedom and services. Bangladesh has placed restrictions on their work and movement.
The government of Bangladesh wants to repatriate the Rohingya to Myanmar. But the plan remains delayed due to ongoing fighting in Arakan and no clear promise of safety for returnees.
